By what name is the alligator pear better known?

I’ve never heard that term for a avocado before

My Jamaican grandparents always called the avocado “alligator pear”, sometimes shortened to just “pear”. My husband could not figure out what my mother was talking about when she referred to the pears on the counter. Only avocados were there. 😀
