RedSeaDiver, Only in the Battle of Britain, when the tactics were for the Hurricanes to attack the bombers and the fewer Spitfires to attack the escorting fighters. Later in the war whilst the production of Hurricanes was replaced by Typhoons, Spitfires continued to be produced until the end of the 1940s.

When my neighbour worked at a car plant in Birmingham, there was still camouflage paint on the windows from when the factory was used for making Spitfires. There is now Spitfire Island nearby with sculptures of Spitfires on it to commemorate them

My rugby club car park in salisbury is the site of one of the most productive ‘secret spitfire factories ‘ ; in WW2 it was decided to hide them away to ensure that production couldn’t be thwarted by German bombers, it was never discovered. Recently they erected a life size model on the end of a pole as if it is flying, now everyone can know the secret, including any who read this 😁

Alice, how wonderful! I grew up watching “the first of the few”. He probably won the Battle of Britain single handedly. You should be very proud.
