Alice, when I was young (in the 30's) it was actually called licorice root candy... was always my favorite salt water taffy on the board walk in Atlantic City.. got to see the diving horse too... MAKE MEMORIES WHILE YOU ARE YOUNG!!!

Licorice root is great for asthma. I used to make a tea of that and other herbs for my very young son.

FiannaFianna, I have low BP also, so licorice is my best friend. At one point my BP was 77/20. Yep, doc wanted to know who carried me into his office. Its not that low anymore, though. Phew! Doc said in all his years of practice he'd never written a scrip for medication to increase BP. Yuh know, there's always one...

Mardell Riley, yes it is good for getting things moving (hahaha). It is also good for raising blood pressure. I take it because I have very low blood pressure. It's sometimes so low I stand up and black out. Licorice really helps. And it tastes awesome to boot.

ZealousJelly5831, I recall as a kid in the 50s I would smell licorice when some elderly men used smoking pipes. That explains it. Never smelled it from cigarettes though

I originally come from Yorkshire in England where licorice is grown. The root of the plant was sold in the local grocery shop as a sweet. We would chew on the root to extract its wonderful flavour....delicious!!
