Another reason why I love this country. One could live several lifetimes and never see all there is to see of wonderful and amazing things here in the U.S.

I scheduled a single day to visit it...could easily have taken a week. It really is massive!

If it's our largest, you'd think it would have more than just a handful of iconic images like "Starry Night", "Persistence of Memory", "Death of Socrates" and "Yellow Cow". Museums can no longer compete with absurd bidding from the 1% or corporations when a masterpiece goes on the block.

WaldoLydeker, If you go to the Met to see the paintings that you list, you will be disappointed! They are in MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art. Different place altogether!

reclusivesavyigloo, probably the reason that the Smithsonian was not included was primarily the question was Art Museums specifically. Also, the Smithsonian house has a great deal of interesting objects included but not limited to a lot of the objects that the u.s. sent into space and retrieved.

Glad to see the AIC listed as an option. Have seen many world-famous paintings there during special exhibits. The Chagall windows are my favorite. It's a must see for any visit to Chicago.

feline3cats, the Louvre is the largest museum and the Met the largest in the United States. The Hermitage has the largest painting collection not necessarily the largest collection

The Met may be the largest, but not the best, IMO. Many people don't realize how many famous paintings are housed at the Art Institute of Chicago. Moulin Rouge, Water Lilies, American Gothic, Nighthawks, are just a few. If Chicago ever returns to "normal", definitely put this museum on your list.

WaldoLydeker, most museums own some paintings outright. They tend to display collections of their patrons or others that offer collections for public viewing. If their bids win that is
