PBAlice54, I am a baby boomer as well, and my father was USAF for 25 years. We lived in 5 different air force bases over the years, including Italy, England, Maine, and Georgia. The sound of air craft constantly was so comfortable and reassuring for me!

Sorry Elf, but the British event you cited took place in 1948. That being said, the research behind supersonic flight was greatly aided by the British research and technology.

Guitarfan 5, I'm a boomer too. Spent my childhood summers in Newburgh, NY. I remember walking past what was then Stewart AFB and watching the B52s take off for Korea. We were little kids, didn't understand about war or peace keeping missions but the sight and sound of those planes made me feel safe and secure. Years later I protested the Vietnam War, the war not the warriors. I thank God for the US Military and always thank them for their service. We can sleep soundly because of their sacrifices. Thank God for men like Chuck Yeager!
