Who invented the mercury thermometer?
Correct answer: Gabriel Fahrenheit
MALICE
now this is the kinda stuff I like to learn about

When I was reading the blurb and got to the point where it says zero for boiling and 100 for freezing, my brain went wtf... until I read further.

You live and learn! I didn’t know F and C were actually people’s names.....
Centenarian
C'mon USA, celcius makes more sense. So does the metric system
NEXUS6
celcius is 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling water
Cambelius
MrNobody, seriously?? we use Celsius here in the UK and nobody gets confused by it. what's more confusing is having the freezing point of water at -32 and boiling point at 212 - where's the logic in that??
sillybee
what I'd like to know is why Fahrenheit chose the scale he did, I bet there was a reason, which probably had some logic at the time.

more great info
Jana
sillybee, I believe he chose reference points of things that were fairly important. 100 degrees Fahrenheit was given to the human body temperature (now corrected to 98.6 degrees) and 0 was given to the freezing point of salt water as that had a big impact on shipping.
MrNobody
Celcius' proposed scale could be done but it would be intuitively confusing.

GOOD NEWS! The natural melting point of chocolate is the human mouth, whether 98.6 F or 37 C. So have a piece of really good chocolate and relax...

Cambelius, what works for us might not work for you guys.

k23d26, don't forget K...
Tony
Cambelius, It's 32, not -32. And it doesn't matter if it's logical. We're used to it!

Fahrenheit works for many of us. Why change it.
hydroxide
sillybee, it was based on a mixture of a certain saltwater mixtures freezing temp for 0, and 90 for the temp of a human body (now understood to be 96). It's a very weird scale. Why the US follows it still baffles me.
Lionessa
Centenarian, We didn't choose what we have. We inherited it. You need to understand that metric is a foreign language to people who've never used it. Do our measurements work for you?
Clo
Laka, please reread!!!
Clo
Cambelius, but you weigh yourselves in “Stone” instead of kg!?!?
Clo
Centenarian, America chooses to honor Mr. Fahrenheit. So instead of complaining about the use of F instead of C, let’s expand our knowledge and learn both!

They lived 40 to 50 years. Life span is much longer nowadays. The world probably missed more amazing contributions from them in their later years. Great works done tho! Salute

so to those of you who think using a c instead of an f is better why don't you remember that Mr Fahrenheit created it and give him some respect

Don't know why they used 'Centigrade' as a last name in the question. Should've used 'Celsius.' I still would've guessed Fahrenheit.

Player #25874027, Kelvin is a SI unit and (iirc) is based on the Celsius system. Zero degrees in Kelvin is the absolute zero, in other words the lowest temperature something can reach, or - 273 degrees celsius

Anastasia,
Read it again! That was Celsius’ original concept which was changed
