Twigster227, I teach a film study class so they know Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd, all great silent actors!
GEM78891
Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy as well as others are wonderful in Silent pictures if you haven't seen them you should!
matizimo
took a class on silent films - they usually weren't shown silently but with musical accompaniment, often a live pianist, organist or even orchestra for important films in big theatres. many small places would play a gramophone if they couldn't afford live musicians.

Silent films are cool and so are black and white photos done by someone with the eye of an artist. Marilyn Monroe was photographed at different times in black and white. Really interesting effect.

GinormousEttin73994, watch an older Hitchcock such as The 39 Steps (1935) vs his work just a few years later like Foreign Correspondent (1940) and sound recording has taken a huge step in the right direction. Same director, probably a lot of the same technical crew; just vastly improved microphone etc technology at their disposal

I love the silent films, but especially Laurel and Hardy, Charley Chaplin, Buster Keaton, The Marx Brothers, and W. C. Fields!!!!! They cannot be beat!!!

There are some amazing early cinema black and whites. most of which are silent. Metropolis. Nosferatu. Frankenstein as well as Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel and Hardy. There are treasures out there that will still chill you and thrill you in ways modern movies cannot achieve. Check out Freaks. Disturbing, mind opening and has a decent plot for such and old title too.

The Artist is a fantastic modern(ish) take on a silent film. A perfect homage 👌

JuJu7756, I watched some of these recently. They're quite funny. Buster Keaton was a hoot. I see how Downey Jr modeled some of this for his work as Holmes, as did Depp before him, esp as Edward Scissorhands. Gotta love physical comedy. Very expressive.

Never enjoyed silent movies. Between trying to read the sub titles and keep with the action on the screen, I would be driven to distraction.

They weren't too silent, for the piano was playing! An I only seen that on tv, on an autobiography.
