Cook was not eaten by cannibals. Anecdotal myths are not facts or history. Poor show and not fit for purpose.

I believe the natives were just being very good hosts. However, Cook and his people thought the natives thought they were Gods. So this question is written from their perspective, not that of the natives. This is as I've heard from watching Drunk History.

Cook was killed in a skirmish that was started by him and his men trying to kidnap the chief and hold him ransom for repairs and supplies. It is unknown if maybe some parts of his body were cannibalized, but he died in battle, not from cannibalism.

Laudy Miss Claudy, yep. the history of the oppression of the Hawai'ian people by white Europeans started there. The Christian missionaries who came later were worse. if you're interested Sarah Vowell wrote a hilarious history of the missionaries that excoriatea them and the Hawai'ian royalty who eventually sold out their own people. called Unfamiliar Fishes

The main reason they believed Cook to be Lono is that his ships -- flying the white standars of Lono (sails) -- arrived at the start of the makahiki. This was the half of the year Lono presided over.

Player Mari, that’s exactly what I was thinking. Reading some of the news and misinformation that is not fact checked that is just being passed on. I have a hard time believing a lot of what this says.
