WOW. If Greenland has been associated with Europe for over a thousand years, and the Inuit didn't migrate there until the 13th century, then technically the Norse would be the native people of Greenland.

MR.ADM,
In the summer, Erik left to settle in the country he had found, which he called Greenland, as he said people would be attracted there if it had a favorable name.
Thus, Iceland was named by a sad Viking and Greenland is the slogan of a medieval marketing scheme.
It actually got its name from Erik The Red, an Icelandic murderer who was exiled to the island. He called it “Greenland” in hopes that the name would attract settlers.
Greenland was once truly green, according to new research which shows that the southern highlands of the country used to be home to a lush boreal forest.

Isn't it interesting that Greenland is covered with ice and Iceland is covered in greenery?
I heard that the names were designed to encourage settlers to go to Greenland and discourage too many settlers from going to Iceland.

Copenhagen was not 'created' as a result of the end of the Kalmar Union. Copenhagen dates back to around year 1000, but wasnt made capital untill several centuries later, and for reasons completely unrelated to what happened in Norway or Greenland.

luckycatfay, I think that there is a native Norwegian black rat - Rattus Norwegicus. The rat flea is the main vector for Black Death.

MR.ADM,
apparently from what I was taught was that the people who named the 2 wanted people to avoid coming to Iceland because they wanted it for themselves, so purposefully did this to trick people into going to the wrong island thinking Greenland would be the nicer of the 2...
