My father planted three small bamboo plants at the back of the garage in 1950, when he bought our home in NJ. He wanted it because he was 1st generation Chinese and came to the United States when he was 11. In 1950, he was 31. It reminded him of home. In 1998 those 3 plants had now replaced the spot where the garage had been, stood 30 feet tall and was so thick that you could use it to lean against. THICK grass!

it depends on what type of bamboo you plant. some types grow from rhizomes and are very invasive. other types are clump forming and are not invasive at all. those types are also the most expensive!

My dear, I bought rhizome type and it took 3 years to grow a tall 12 ft bush. But I soon found out invasive it was. Had to use a concoction of Epsom salts, white vinegar and Dawn dish to kill the roots

a few years ago our stand of bamboo withered and died. I was sad because it is beautiful and also very useful. But the following Spring it came back! I was SO happy!

I adore bamboo! It is one of the world's most precious resources, in my book. Some species can grow up to 1 ft. a day ( I would watch that if I could). It is super strong. AND pliable. Too bad humans want to use other resources instead .

Fun fact! It was also used for torture. They would tie people over bamboo shoots and it would impale them before the day was out as it grows so quick and is strong enough to go through the body. 😀
