OpalScorpio51942, What a pity there was no mention of the 'little ships'; the cabin cruisers, pleasure boats from seaside resorts; motor boats, small yachts and even rowing boats that set out with their amateur sailors to ferry men from the beaches to the ships which could not get closer to the shore. It was one of the major acts of civilian heroism that occurred during the war. One of the last remaining boats was on show in the Imperial War Museum when I went there. Believe me, I would not want to go to sea in it on a calm day, never mind rescuing soldiers (some wounded) and rowing them to the ships under fire over and over again.

It was just a matter of time before America was pulled into the war. But if the Germans had slaughtered the British at Dunkirk it would of been us and Canada against the rest of world. Especially of they had not broken their treaty with the Soviets. The war would of lasted at lot longer. The British lived up to their Bull Dog image!

I'm a very proud Italian, but my greatest shame is that "we" sided with the axis forces. However, I'm eternally grateful for the Italian resistance fighters who helped destroy bridges, tunnels and roadways essential to the nazis. They also helped allied servicemen escape.

JoyfulWrecker1775, I'm impressed and amazed. My father. a veteran of WW II, never mentioned this rescue. I've been out in the Gulf of Mexico in a 17 foot boat and I did not like rough water. those small boats and owners are truly hereos.

the small ships were central to the idea of a miracle, virtually all crewed by civilians of all ages. We just had to go and get our boys no matter what
