quite a bit of revisionist history in that explanation, Americans never saw Jimmy Carter as a strong or decisive president. if anything that speech made him less popular and he wasn't that popular at the time

"Strong and significant president"... Now that's hilarious. What I remember of the Carter administration is weakness in leadership, weakness in foreign policy, high inflation, high unemployment, high gas prices and oh yeah, the American embassy in Iran taken over and the people inside taken hostage.

Player #24565386, strike that reverse it. Iran would not release the hostages until Carter was out. They needed wanted to deny Carter the victory of negotiating their release, so they released them as soon as he was gone. Carter negotiated for their release, and secured it, but was denied the political victory of it happening during his term in office.
