My version of the question has a picture of prairie dogs - not that it matters - just wanted to note it so folks don't assume they're capybara.

MagicTwanger, they are prairie dogs in the pic. And capybaras weighing in at up to 175 pounds is more like a large size dog.

Uninitialized, Good thing they were found. Since they are Tropical/ sub-tropical I can’t imagine that they would have fared well in the Toronto winter weather.

I've never seen a capybara myself however I've seen pictures and videos. not surprised they're the largest rodent given where they come from and all the eco-diversity that lives there.

ChampionNymph37634, The infi in the article says they can get over 175 pounds. That is more than I have ever weighed.

Here in Colombia they are endangered because of dry seasons worsened by minery and because peolple eat them in certain regions of the country, their meat is very tasty and tender. Now, to prevent that, they are being reproduced in captivity, like having a hatchery for human consumption. Kind of sad. We call them "chigüiros".

dai.laffin, I did some reading & looks like "Capy's" are larger than I thought. I guess they get over 100 lbs.
