How many colors are there in the visible spectrum?
Correct answer: 7
sunsetdb7
This question is technically incorrect as there is no quantitative differentiation of colours in the visible spectrum, but an infinite variation in light wavelengths producing what we 'see' as colour. Rainbows are commonly said to contain seven colours, but that is just from the prismatic effect of raindrops in the atmosphere.

303RPB, Has it occurred to you that he's not from your country? Calling someone names because he's spelling the word in a non - American way is very rude.

It's a continuum, so an infinity

Lady V, Yes. As far as we English are concerned Americans don't spell correctly.

After having three questions reguarding the rainbow spectrum, I'd be ashamed to get this wrong!

laserfuzz247, yes in my early teaching days we did Through the Rainbow reading books so I got to know the order of the spectrum very well !
Birdiemom
You have only to look at a box of crayons to know there are more than 7 colors, but I knew the answer they wanted.
Tavism13
There are arguably only 6 main colours in the rainbow, 3 primary, 3 secondary. Tradition holds that indigo be included, but it's just the transition between blue and purple (or violet) and therefore tertiary. Newton added it because he wanted the number to coincide with the 7 musical notes and days of the week. I read somewhere that scientists are starting to leave indigo out, much like poor old Pluto.

Lunarsea, Correct! Orange (a mixture of Yellow and Red in equal proportions) and Green (equal proportions of Yellow and Blue) are secondary colors, along with Violet (equal proportions of Blue and Red).

this question is entirely subjective. Ask valspar (a paint manufacturer
Lunarsea
knowbrains, orange and green are not primary colours

Player #18444931,
You have to wonder then, why computer, printer, andTV manufacturers are always increasing the number of colours their devices can produce if we can only see so few !

Incorrectly stated question as the human eye alone can detect variation within as many as 16 million colors and that’s just in the visual spectrum. Based on wavelength, the number approaches infinity.

Aren't we gettiing a bit too technical & scientific about a question that has only to do with color? Color, like beauty & art are in the eye of the beholder.

If a double rainbow appears in the sky the colors are reversed.
constantgamer0421
sunsetdb7, right, any precipitation in the atmosphere will create prisma by refraction (bending light).🙂
