I just watched an episode of Johnny Carson that featured Red Skelton. According to Red, his real name was Richard Red Skelton and it was a teacher that insisted 'Red' was a nickname so Red came up with Bernard as his middle name. Was this one of Red's jokes? I don't know.

Late in Red's career, he worked stand-up in smaller venues. I was staying at the old Clock Tower Inn in Rockford, IL. They had a nice steakhouse restaurant and a modest coffeehouse kind of restaurant. I was at the coffeehouse, and saw Red sitting in a booth by himself having dinner before his show. As I left, I stopped by and apologized for bothering him but said that I wanted to tell him how much I enjoyed him for years. He was so gracious, asking me not to apologize and thanking me for stopping by. A true gentleman.

Watched him with Daddy until he went off the air. Mr. Skelton was my fave of the tv comedians. He provided a diversity of characters and was true to them while being funny and occasionally inspired pathos.
