Slogger, My dad was on HMS Invincible, I was 10, it was quite scary for me, but he came home, he retired from the navy in 1988 after 22 years service.

Lizzi, The islands were never colonised, they were settled by the Brits after the French and Spanish pushed on into ‘colonising’ South America...the Malvinas were the name given to the islands by Argentina...a country that didn’t exist when brits settles there. Perhaps Argentina should give Patagonia back the land they stole from them....

Everyone seems to forget the extremely daring long range mission carried out by old and retired Vulcan bombers with fuel support from Victor Bomber/refeulers to leapfrog the naval task force that was en route and take out the airfield as a swift message to the Argentinians. The windows leaked, they hadn't flown for ages and to top it off the crews had no decent maps of the area. The mission involved a stop off on Ascension Island where true to British tradition they all had a few drinks before setting off at noon. They needed several Victor bombers to continually refuel the two Vulcans in a complicated sequence and one had to pull out early. A miscalculation meant the sole bomber wouldn't have fuel to return to base and prepared to ditch on way home until a refreshed Victor found it. Once they had caught up with the fleet the Vulcan was fired upon as no-one knew it was a friendly, and of all the bombs dropped, one bomb hit the runway and accomplished the mission.

And thus began the Falklands War between both the UK and Argentina in 1982. It was the UK's first modernised war in which it had employed the first military combat usage of the Harrier jump jet (mainly the BAe Harrier Gr.3 of the Royal Air Force, or RAF, and the Royal Navy's version, the BAe Sea Harrier FRS.1) that were operationally deployed on the aircraft carriers Hermes and Invincible as part of the British task force that took on waves of Argentine A-4K and Mirage fighter jets both in the air, land and sea. As for me personally, I was a 1-year old and living in MD when the war broke out in 1982.

But the name Malvinas is originally French, not Spanish. The islands were colonised by people from St. Malo in France
