ImpertinentPony72241, I actually have met Paul Tibbits, and asked him how he felt about all the people that died at Hiroshima. He said millions more would have died, if we had not stopped that war

ImpertinentPony72241, Japan was not going to surrender and an invasion of the country was eminent, which would have cost thousands of Allied lives. Yes, dropping the bomb was necessary and I, like you, hope it's never used again.

JezzerLX, I'm English and I think if the Japanese had had the bomb they would not have hesitated to use it. Yes war is the most awful thing in the world but once in it each side will commit atrocities to win.

The fact is, once commited to war, we should be commited to ending it as quickly as possible for the sake of all parties concerned. To not use any & all means to WIN a war, is laughable. Make no mistake; our enemies will spare no effort to defeat us. True, there are limits to what is morally acceptable in waging war. However, as the old saying goes, "all's fair in love and war".

Gary, sure, if it were normal circumstances. But Japan was a pretty horrinle, aggressive military state in which the civilians took part in the poor treatment of its prisoners of war. After Pearl Harbor and the many inhumanities committed against fellow service members, dropping that bomb wasn't hard at all. The Empire of Japan was planning on sending civilians with explosives onto the beach to keep Americans from landing. The carnage would have been beyond belief. So ending the war with overwhelming force was deemed the better option. Seems clear to me. I really don't understand the problem here.

First of all the US had already lost more that 125,800 troops in Europe during WW II. The US was "running out of soldiers" and Japan would not surrender. So the US dropped a BIG bomb that killed a lot of people...and Japan still wouldn't surrender. So the US dropped one more that killed more people and the Emperor finally surrendered. It was good for the US because they only made two Atomic bombs.

Delan1947, The myth that the bombs ended the war needs to end. The Russians quickly moving through Japanese territory and about to land on the Japanese main islands caused the end of the war. They expected they would get better terms from the Americans, which they did.
