Pity it doesn't say what the French word for wallet is.

Player #2438477, You are right, it doesn’t. The Old French word was “bougette” (OED), meaning a small leather bag.

Player #2438477, It is portefeuille which translates literally to leaf or sheet of paper carrier. This question is a bit nonsensical in my opinion.

The question states what common word comes from French for wallet. The word comes from the French "bougette", a little bag. So there’s an evident translation usage change, budget is from the archaic French bougette, diminutive of bouge, 'pocket, purse' (Old French bolge, diminutive bolgete).

Player #2438477, I thought it was portefeuille, literally “carry leaf”, but that doesn't fit the clue.

Player #2438477, the word for wallet in French is porte-feuille, literally “carry notes (or sheets of paper) so as far as I can see it has nothing to do with the French word. Also, in French the word for purse is “sac”, or in the case of a change purse: “porte- monnaie”, so again, nothing to do with the word “budget”

Player #2438477, portefeuille is the French word now used for wallet. This question is confusing--it seems to be based on an English word or archaic word, not modern French.
