IllustratedGrrl, no. In spanish we don't use the term " native american" to refer to the local natives,we use the spanish word "indio" which translates as indian.

I visited Machu Picchu in 2006 & got some stunning photos, especially of the sun rise. It is an amazing place!

aragogandshelob, I think the author meant Indian as in the now defunct term for Native Americans. Although, if this information came from National Geographic, as the citation states, I can't imagine them still calling them Indians.
