DiabolicalJoker25653, I’m from Ft. Sill/Lawton OK (born & raised), 1st - Army has Posts not Bases, Air Force has Bases, 2nd - Geronimo was in-prisoned & died at Ft. Sill, OK, his grave is on this Post, my Great Grandmother knew him when she was a child, he would catch rides on her & other people’s buckboards to travel around the Post, my Great Uncle was the Machinist Person who would make the Eagles (2) that decorated his Tombstone, people were always stealing them for souvenirs. He stayed pretty busy making & replacing them. Folk-Lore here at Ft. Sill is that once he was being chased by the Cavalry because he missed curfew, and to escape them, he jumped off a steep cliff into a creek called Medicine Bluff here on Post. He reportedly yelled out his name, Geronimo, on his way down, the Cavalry didn’t jump. The next day he returned to his Cell on his own. That’s why when people jump out of planes & off other high places they yell “Geronimo.” I don’t know if it’s true but 95% of the people who are from & live here, believe it is true because locals from here had family and friends tell this well-known story who lived & knew of it when it happened, including my Great Grandma & Great Uncle. I believe there is lots truth in it. There are many local stories about his everyday life that has been told by the people who knew him & shared personal accounts with their families as mine have.

I am Mescalero Apache. About half of those when they were released from Ft.Sill, came to Mescalero. They were not offered their own place so the Mescalero invited them to live on our land. Some stayed at Fort Sill though because after 25 years as prisoners there they had developed ties an and some feel for the l land. They are the people who have been the longest US Prisoners of War. Today they have a tribal Council but others interfere in it. The tribal historian advises any films and books about the Chiricahua and retains much traditional knowledge.

ClumsyBronco26606, History is not real truth,,the books are written with one intention,,,to block out the real truth of what the American Indians did for America.

Western shows were so popular, when I was growing up. Cowboys...good guys and Indians...savages 🙄 Little Big Man was a big eye opener, for me. Learning about the trail of tears, and other devastating stories about what white men did to the native Americans, made me cry, and not proud of being white.

Calliope, nor should you be ashamed, I understand the feeling, but you must remember that it was a long time ago. Hopefully we are better than that. I will not apologize for being white. not my choice. what is my choice is how I live. I think we need to show that we are not the devil that everyone thinks.

The Indian people lived many centuries ago a very hard to death life after the white men took their land. Nothing personal, but, I don't like what had happened to them. Just imagine if you lived thaughs days. Sad, so sad...

Was sent here, was sent there. Imprisoned. Never returned to his home. Sad and shameful treatment of a proud people.

I am enjoying this game and learning a lot . It saddens me though to see that our schools have so abandoned the teaching of the English language and spelling that Americans come off as dummies who cannot speak their own language ( granted, it is one of the most difficult - but that’s why we need to teach it!) I sometimes can’t even figure out what some people are saying!

once again, mans inhumanity to man. Geronimo was a true warrior & brilliant strategist. had there been more, they would have anyalated the intruders. I am American and I am a man. not a color or stereotype.

When I was a kid I always rooted for the Cowboys & Calvary. As I grew older and understood how the US literally stole the country from our Native Americans and wronged them in every way possible, I always root for the Native Americans/Indians.

Geronimo and Cochise both were Chiricahua Apache Indians. I highly recommend if you are in Cochise County in AZ to go to Chiricahua National Monument and mountains for spectacular scenery and history. Also visit Cochise Stronghold and Ft. Bowie where Geronimo's son, Little Robe, is buried.

Glad I got the answer wrong. Apache! Now I know, and people here have explained the origin of people shouting "Geronimo" when parachuting. This is a good place, except for the haters.

geronimo does not mean 'one who yawns '. it's Spanish for Jerome. his native Apache name means ' one who yawns'.

I grew up near Geronimo, OK south of Ft. Sill. It’s rumored that the town originated as a settlement where the Army allowed Geronimo to live out his last days with his family.

I read that Geronimo (not his Apache name) was Spanish for (St.) Jerome, and was given to him by a monk.
