Big Blue Narwhal, I'm afraid I haven't gotten round to reading it, but didn't he have hallucinations, believing windmills to be giants? The expression "tilting at windmills" is derived from that incident and means "to struggle against imaginary opposition". Sounds a bit crazy to me, but that isn't the same as mad, more eccentric.
