Lorraine4748, people would think twice since 14 have died here in New Zealand so far at the White Island eruption on Monday. I agree with you, people need to respect mother nature and stay away from such unpredictable dangerous natural wonders.

Squinty7, I went up Vesuvius — a wonderful experience — and also visited Pompeii . Did not visit Herculaniam but it is more natural than Pompeii so I have heard.

Been there when I was in the Navy, they had a tour that takes you to the top, The stench of Sulfur was so bad. It's still an active Volcano,,which rumbles all the time💀

Squinty7, What a horrible way for those people to die - I definitely would not want to be anywhere near any volcano - I don't find them fascinating, just scary.

Vee73, That really shook me up 'cos if I'd been on that cruise ship I'd have done that trip to White Island, probably on the 2nd tour if I'd had a choice, & I'd be dead! I often wonder how the survivors are going now.

Squinty7, When you are able to go, it will be worth your effort. Try to see both ruins. After we toured Pompeii, others said that Herculaneum was better. A high point in my travels.
