Diver Dan, I looked it up... the country actually changed its name twice. It was first changed 1939, but reverted back to Siam in 1945. Then they changed it permanently to Thailand in 1949. The site also says the Thai capital is not called Bangkok... for some "strange" reason we don't use its real name which (no joke!) is: "Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit" Which is 163 characters long and since there are no spaces between words in Thai, it holds the record for the city with the longest name in the world.

Montana Lady, The area/ province around Sukhothai was the original capital of ancient Siam, then came Ayutthaya which was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century......Personally, I believe Bangkok ended up as the country’s capital because of its central location along the Chao Phraya River. When referring to Bangkok you can use either that, or Krung Thep, both are understood by the locals.

In the info is skipped the fact that Thailand joined to Nazi/Fascists/Japanese alliance during WW2. It was defeated by Great Britain later in the war.

To anyone who has a chance to visit Bangkok, try to be there on week end. There is a big market that we can buy local products and handicrafts with bargain prices. It opens on week end. And if we come around 8 a.m, we possibly become the very first customers, we can get lower price. I bought a piece of silk scarf for 100 baht. The next day I saw a very similar thing in a shop priced 200 baht.
