Alina, actually his father, Vlad II was known as Dracul, meaning "dragon." Vlad III (Tsepes) was indeed known as Dracula(e), "son of the dragon." Stoker found this while doing research for the novel.

Hardly the first or prototypical vampire. They were a staple of Victorian literature. "The Rivals of Dracula" gives an excellent summary of vampires in historical fiction as well as some fascinating alternatives that are obvious precursors of more modern vampire stories such as Buffy, The Lost Boys and Twilight.
