What is the highest permanent peacetime rank in the U.S. Army?

I’m confused about what the ranks are & does it mean in Peace Time anyone above General is demoted but still retire at whatever highest rank was? Too confusing. Not a good question or a clear answer.

Not “virtually all”. It’s all officers who attain the ranks of Lt Gen and General keep them. So this question is bogus and completely incorrect. Wikipedia is not a good place to get information, especially since in this case it’s wrong. General is the highest peacetime rank. General of the Army is the highest wartime rank. General of the Armies is Washington’s rank (a six star).
