I lived in Las Vegas from 1998 to 2015 and usually made a visit to the Dam at least yearly. Such a sight and it's history is amazing. The new highway Bridge that was completed by 2007 or so is a great place to visit.

Although his administration not rated very highly by historians, the man was a brilliant engineer. He had a magnificent career and only went downhill after he elected president. So wonderful that the engineering marvel of the time named in his honor.

I was a dam builder Across the river deep and wide Where steel and water did collide A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound But I am still around I'll always be around and around and around and around and around

The men that fell in there while they were pouring the crete couldn't be saved , they just kept on pouring on top of them , how terrible that must been.

I live in Utah and travel frequently to AZ to visit my family and friends. Our route takes us through Page, AZ where the Glen Canyon Dam is located (also on the Colorado River). I've toured it and it was quite amazing but that was back when it was running at full capacity. Many men fell to their deaths. The pics are awesome too especially if you're into history. I don't think I would be able to hang on those rough ropes on rickety looking scaffolding. I would love to see the Hoover Dam someday.

Uninitialized, “Collateral damage” (what a charming euphemism for “life is cheap”) has always been an accepted price to pay for: war victories, “scientific” advancement, industrial advancement, and of course $$$. Tragic!!!

QuerulousEnt5519, I guess I am a “Square”. Friends and I went to see another friend who was stationed at Nellis Air Force base, near Las Vegas. My friends liked the Casinos, Shows, the Dance Clubs, etc. But Saturday morning my Air Force buddy took us to see Hoover Dam. I enjoyed it, and took many pictures. We are older, and laugh at things we did, but my friends see me as not the party animal type and square, for loving the great Hoover Dam.

Uninitialized, not true! Each pour was only about 3 feet deep so the men and their coworkers would get them out. none of the engineers would allow such a weak spot to persist in the new dam. They tell you this during the dam tours.

In about 1978 we spent 10 hours canoeing down the Colorado River past the London Bridge and I had the worst sunburn ever! I tried to never get sunburnt again! We didn’t have SPF lotions back then, in fact some people used accelerators to get a deeper, more tan (I didn’t use it I was afraid of it). That’s growing up in Arizona

My father worked for Duquesne Light and Power Co. here in PGH, PA. In 64 we went inside to see the inner workings of the turbines, etc. Noisy, but Daddy understood it all and was in heaven.
