Not all of Jaws footage involved the fake shark. When "Jaws" is thrashing about on top of the empty cage, that is a real shark with a downscaled cage. Spielberg loved the footage and rewrote the script so that Hooper escaped and survived so that he could use the footage and explain why the cage is empty in that shot.

being born a Floridian and I first saw Jaws in 76 in California when I return to Florida it took me about a year to go back into the ocean I still to this day find it a Monumental movie and hold on to the fact that the pilot of the boat Quint died before the debut Robert Shaw was a great American actor
