DAdio, I live there! My husband is from this area and is a descendant of Swedish, Norwegian, and French Canadian immigrants. If you ever visit, order a pasty. It’s a meat pie that the Cornish brought over and took down in the mines with them.

My Italian family moved to the UP around the late 1890s to early 1900s. Great Nono worked in the mines harvesting Iron Ore. Poor man died of black lung, very common in miners back then, before I was born. If you ever visit the area be sure to do it in mid-Fall. The rolling hills of autumn colors as far as the eye can see is truly breath taking.

My grandfather had a dry goods store in Manistique on the upper peninsula during the lumbering boom of the early 1900s. on one of his buying trips to Detroit, a gentleman invited him to join with him in a new venture. My grandfather refused, so James Cash Penny found another investor.

Highly recommend a visit to the UP and Northern Michigan in the Lower Peninsula is great too. One of the most famous places in the UP is Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackinaw).

wesley, Ouch!! Wesley, did Grandpa ever express regret? or did he "tightening up" or "bristle" every time he saw, or heard about a JC Penny store? Do YOU ever think of what could've been? I ask because I STILL think of a "missed" opportunity that would have been very profitable, had my family... NOTHING on the scale of your Grandpa's missed opportunity!!
