Spinster has such negative connotations, when you call a man a bachelor it does not carry the same negative connotations.

Your mother, I may be considered your Grandmother but...Spinster goes back to when women had very few options to support herself, so they would marry any man that asked them. Spinsters decided they'd rather spin wool than be married to someone they didn't like. Since the Norm was married, no matter what, the Norm decided there was something Wrong with these women. So the word became an insult. Or so my Sixties Feminist heart chooses to believe. To this day Women that choose to remain single are suspected by Normal people. I was eating lunch with a close friend, both of us married just not ringed right then. She had been helping me drive for days and miles. I reached across the table and squeezed her hand in gratitude for her help. The people next to us asked for a new table rather than sit by women like us. Spinsters were probably treated that way.
