Player #185561, there was a rock band back in 1980 called Carmen. I saw them live on a music program on US television. David Bowie was the headliner.

I believe this opera is connected to the city of Ronda in Andalucia, with the famous Bridge between the old and new parts of town.

There is an amazing film made in 1983, a Flamenco version of Carmen directed by Carlos Saura, choreographed by Antonio Gades, and although Bizet's music is in there, it is transformed, added to and played by Paco de Lucia! The plot weaves in and out of reality during dance rehearsals and performances. I've watched it over and over again... enthralling! You don't need to love opera or flamenco to love this film, but it would certainly be a wonderful introduction to either or both.
