I saw my first ballet when I was about 13 years old. After a few short numbers, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet performed The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, a modern ballet about a young First Nations woman in the big city. I was totally stunned by its beauty and pathos. The amazing Chief Dan George, a First Nations actor, provided narration for the story.

Player #8393284, yes technically it states it started during the Italian Renaissance of between 15th - 16th century’s, spreading as a aristocratic dance of the French court influenced by Catherine de Medici who had married king Henry II of France. I think the most important factor to why ballet is considered a French origin dance is king Louis XIV founded the Académie Royale de Musique (the Paris Opera) within which emerged the first professional theatrical during the late 17th century. So yeh trick question I guess, for me it emerged in Italy but dare I say, probably changed considerably through its French influence.

DSDA, You know what? The Ecstacy of Rita Joe performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet was also the first ballet I had ever seen. I came up from Morris, Manitoba with my high school class to see it. I was blown away by their performance. I bought the soundtrack with the music and some of Chief Dan George's incredible narration.
