Who invented the Cotton Gin?

When I was a little boy, I knew Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, but I had no idea what a gin was. I guess I was too afraid to ask.

WaldoLydeker, I used to go to the cotton gin with both of my grandfathers! One was a cotton farmer and the other had worked at the gin before I was born. He had gotten two fingers partially cut off. It was a gathering place where men would go to visit and find out the price of the cotton, because the price could go up or down.

I didn't know that it was in the late 1700s that this machine was devised. I always thought it was about 100 years later.
