In Venice, what is a vaporetto?

Traveled by one. Much cheaper than gondolas although definitely not as romantic 😏

Spent three days in Venice and visited the islands via vaporetto; it was great: Burano, where the art of hand-made lace making is coming to an end, was my favorite. It is picturesque, with the houses painted in bright colors.
