I speak French fluently but found that people in Paris treated me like a nobody, they are so aloof.

Player Elf Councel, I tried the same thing with my horrible French and heard a waiter refer to me as a "lousy Canadian". I'm from the US!

When I visited a bar in France, I asked the waiter "Do you have frogs' legs?" "Oui Monsieur" was his reply. "In that case", I said, "Please could you hop over the bar and pour me a glass of wine?!"

Very good question, France is number one in the world about tourism destination, but Europeans visit the most Spain. 😎

Player Elf Counsel, i reckon that was the secret of your success ... the fact that you made an effort to speak French! In my experience, it goes a long way there :)

Most people say that French are arrogant, in a way it seems that way. But I think they are just proud and I find them very passionate. I got to know few of them, and while on tour in France whenever I come across anyone while walking, I always say Bonjour with a smile, and they always respond back. Treat everyone with common courtesy and respect that’s my motto.

I stopped over in Paris for a few days in 2002 (on way home from UK). I used as much school-girl French as I could remember (with broad Aussie accent) & was treated very well. Only once did I forget & ask a question in English...only to be shooed away like an annoying fly. Moral of story: try to fit in & Parisians will appreciate your effort.

Granny, There is no such thing as “Nederlanders” in English. Citizens from the Netherlands should be refered to as Dutch 😉

I found at if your generally respectful and try to speak some French, they correct you and help you. One time we wanted to buy some cheese. The woman behind the counter was no help. A lovely middle-aged well dressed Parisian woman came up and helped us pick out some cheese. My husband was smitten. I don't blame him. The Louvre is amazing!

I didn't know that. Thought it was China due to their trade power. Every financially stable and high middle class Indian businessman always travels to China for trade and business

Several years ago, a couple of friends and my husband (they are Nederlanders) and I visited Paris for several days. We stayed in a camp, shopped in supermarket and cooked our food. One day we took the red bus to sight seeing in the city. We bought tickets that valid for one full day. When we stopped nearby the Arc de Triomphe, the bus assistant tried to get extra money. He said that each of us must pay him €15. We said that we had not finished the sightseeing and would take another bus. He let us go because the bus must run again.

I like France very much, it has some beautiful countryside and coastlines, I find the people to be quite friendly, I've never had any problems with the French at all , unlike the Belgians who were rude, greedy, dishonest and stole my friends wallet
