Beach scenes from the movie 'Chariots of Fire' were filmed in which country?

I always thought it was strange to use that location and claim it was somewhere on the south coast of England (as they did in the film) when it was clearly St. Andrews, one of the most famous sporting locations in the world and instantly recognisable to anyone with any knowledge of golf.
