What famous American road was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985?
Correct answer: Route 66
Montana Lady
My dad drove Route 66 in the early 60s moving from CA to NYC... and happened to leave a suitcase in a hotel somewhere in Oklahoma. That suitcase had not only his clothes, but his wallet full of cash with his Id's and everything he owned of value in it.
Over 25 years later, my uncle was on Route 66 and stayed at a hotel in Oklahoma. The desk manager saw his last name and asked if he was related to my dad and returned the suitcase... wallet, Id's, cash, everything still as it had been the day my father left it.
How's that for an honest man?

It still exists, but the names of other highways usually take precedence. Just have to follow the little "Historic Route 66" tour signs. There's still a Route 66 Drive-In Theater in my hometown.

In 1963, 5 adults, 1 teenager and I, at age 10, travelled from Philadelphia to Pasadena along Route 66. Magnificent sceneries of wild mustangs grazing the prairie, our crossing the Painted Desert, and visiting the Grand Canyon. Traveling Route 66 allowed us to see wonders you will never see by traveling on today's highways.
