The use of computers has made animating hands much faster and easier, so part of the reason at this point is tradition. We're so used to seeing weird cartoony hands that it is partly an aesthetic.

apparently Postman Pat has less fingers than usual & that's highly regarded as sacrad in the Japanese audiences. right this moment, it escapes me for the reason why, yet I remember reading it once in a magazine article that touched on this verry subject.
