Who/what was/is Moondog?

I remember on the show "Gidget " she called her boyfriend "moondog!"

I was expecting to see "Disc Jockey" among the choices. Alan Freid with his Moondog Coronation Ball was among the first to play rock n roll on the radio. I wonder if he chose the name to honor this man?

I remember Rob Reiner playing a character named Moondog on the show Gomer Pyle (1969). Perhaps the writers were inspired by the real person

A guy I went to high school with in the 70's calls himself Moondog. He plays in/around Redondo Beach, CA, and in NO WAY is as talented as the original Moondog. He sings blues, doesn't play an instrument.
