BrassBeam81667, it was a sad and very hard time in history. Life is like that sometimes. Can’t imagine having a starving family. We were never rich, but always had a place to live and food on the table. Didn’t have any luxuries, but always had necessities and a few extras, thanks to a Mom who always set something aside to surprise her family.

:(Nancy E):, Yes I agree, our furniture was orange crates, we had food, the basics-- nothing fancy, for my dad was a hard working man. I mean what individual would go into a refrigerated train box car to stack boxes of Oranges shipped to America or other parts of the world. Occasionally he brought the second rate Oranges that did sell in the markets. These golf ball sized fruit, maybe this are reason, I hardly catch colds today...Yes thanks to our parents and God that we lived well. My prayer is people could experience the fortunes and blessings we had. I love Steinbeck, he shows that we can channel are wrath/ anger; we have and a result can be as sweet as Grapes...

NimbleCavalier81232, The article reads of drought. The roaring 20's was over; Prohibition came to an end; the Great Depression started at the end of 1929. There was the Dust Bowl, too. Steinbeck always emphasized The Salt of the Earth; The people of Oklahoma were poor but hard working people; they were per say the Beverly Hillbilly type, yet, In real life these people succumbed the natural disasters and helped California, become the Salad Bowl of America then ; the Grapes of Wrath shows people can get up on their two feet and work...Today some see work as a difficulty and other negative disgust. They would rather push buttons here and there. There is no more responsibility.

John Steinbeck wrote about how displaced and impoverished Americans survived the Great Depression. He felt a great affinity for them, I think. Wonderful author, one of my favourites.
