salliesmom33, there's still one artificial heart out there being used. most doctors use an LVAD (left ventricular assist device) which essentially does the work of the heart without having to replace the whole thing. usually either one is put in as a bridge to transplant. you get put at the top of the transplant list for awhile if you have one. you can live up to five years with one. I think the max was around seven.

mannicmomma6, I have CGF, and currently have an ICD implanted (combo of defib/pacemaker) and could never afford any type of transplant or artifical...but I will keep on fighting this for as long as I can.

yippetyskippety, my darling nephew had this and was also on the transplant list, unfortunately he didn't make it and we lost him this year, we can only hope that medical science comes up with something better soon as the list is so long, no young person should go this way.

yippetyskippety, They wanted my late husband to have one and he refused. Did not want to die hooked to a machine. He passed peacefully 3 weeks later and was happy to the last.

I remember when he had this done. I was a teen, but remember it because I thought he must be suffering. When I don't feel well, I like to be left alone. He had a 3 ring circus daily. Very brave and selfless of him. RIP

biff, only the heart and it’s not as simple as you make it sound. Any organ transplant has complications especially artificial ones. I had a liver and kidney transplant with so many complications I almost died! Was crazy. So imagine a fake heart doing the job, it gets messy
