Saw a documentary on this. One thing that keeps food from being donated is the “Sell by”date which is totally arbitrary! Ridiculous!

ConsequentDessert10, no they need to find to find a way to clear those shelves without throwing it away and give it to SOMEBODY! ANYBODY! TOO MANY HUNGRY PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD!

I was thinking people throwing food away at home, not waste from stores and restaurants. In resort towns in Colorado restaurants used to package up food and leave it in the alley at closing time. It was a known fact by the locals. If you were hungry, you could get food.

There are a couple companies now that sell the produce that isn't perfect. I found their link on Facebook. A tomato might be badly misshapen but if I'm going to chop it up for nachos it doesn't matter. Likewise misshapen apples for a pie. I hope that lessens the waste.

AutumnalCrust12, We do our part in our household! We eat leftovers from restaurants we dine at and also from previous meals I've prepared. We avoid throwing food out and try to be creative in making meals from them! We all need to do our part, not only businesses.

I've noticed a lot of American people in poverty are fat. Then I was at the dollar store and noticed almost all the bags of cookies, boxes of macaroni, flavored crackers, sweet cereal and bread. It's cheap and it has a longer shelf life. There wasn't fruits and vegetables or much protien products to be found. I am sure if they went out of their way and thought about it they could definitely find better deals but some people grew up eating this type of food all the time and it's what their used to.

New California law in the beginning of 2022 requires grocery stores and other food suppliers to donate all edible food to a food rescue organization or food bank.

Good info, but really a poor question. You can do nothing but guess at those 4 choices, so close to one another and about a 9-yr-old statistic.

slabjacker1, They should put a 2nd date that shows when it's no longer edible produce and why ‼️

Composting should be a bigger motivation than it is... behind donating edible foods.

Most of our uneaten food is offered to the chickens, birds, or creatures of the night. The rest is composted on site. Very little goes to landfills or incinerators. Several households compost, so I really don’t no how accurate this estimate is.

:(Nancy E):, Did not know that. Wish that would be something that would be practiced with restaurants or grocery stores throughout the USA.

happydoghappycat - Not to mention the lack of grocery stores in impoverished areas. People are forced to shop at convenience stores which, generally, don't offer fresh fruit or vegetables.

food banks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and many others refuse ,and or , throw away donated food just because of expired "sell by date" ," best if used by date" and dents or damage on packaging. in some cases even refuse generic name brands.
