I lived through it. I believe it was the weather. every room had a grate to burn coal for heating and or cooking. if you look at oldfilms f London it is always hazy. going to school on a bus it was eerie emerging from the fog into sunlight as it climbed a hill.

I read the other day that the Cleaner Air act is working in London but not in Birmingham, it seems that anywhere past Watford gap is not worth bothering about by any politician in Britain 🤨

Davy, Livingston, The problem of London is no longer because of coal and the air looks clear. Exhaust fumes from slow moving and start/stop traffic cause dangerous pollution. I live 30 miles from London. Visits in my childhood always resulted in a bad headache. Everyone smoking didn't help.
