StirCrazy, very true.. The brick was issued to me because I was a supervisor and I’m telling you it was worth every penny to call for back up and help for injured while working road side work crews (chain gangs). Thank you very much 💕

I worked in Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG) in 1992 and used a "Brick" for my testing. We've come a long way.

Actually, the origination of Cell Phone technology came from Amateur Radio (Hams). The first use of the technology was developed by Amateurs. The radio Transmits and Receives on different frequencies, a few Khz apart, allowing full duplex communication (duplex means you can TX and RX simultaneously, without waiting for the other party to finish before speaking). Radio Amateurs were using FM transceivers in vehicles, etc using a duplexer and something called "autopatch", which basically is the bridge between the fixed base station radio and the Ma Bell telephone network. As a "Ham" for over 30 years, I had one in my car in the late 80's. "Cellular" communication is basically done with something called a Repeater. A repeater retransmits the message from "base station" to "base station", either wirelessly or wired, without dependence on Ma Bell, to increase the range of the transmission, which, for purposes of continuous communication, is limited to line of sight and therefore the curvature of the earth. (FM doesn't depend on line of sight, but needs it for continuous communication). AM requires line of sight.

I had one of those guts in the truck car phones back in the day. It was over a dollar a minute to talk on it. I also had a Radio Shack brick phone later on, back in the day.

When are they going to implant them in peoples' heads since they can't seem to put them down?

My husband worked construction in very remote places and had what was called bag phone, supplied by his company. Before that, it was a utility pole in the middle of nowhere and a home phone set on the bench seat of his pick up truck. Had to unplug it to drive away or plug it in to use it.

Bjach, I had the Motorola car phone, the battery/equipment for it filled the boot of the BMW, and I remember answering it for the first time when I was in a car park, I was overcome with embarrassment and slunk down in my seat so no one could see me! How things have changed! 📞📱
penawareof
Used to have a Motorola.

My dad had “The Brick” cell phone. He used to walk through the mall with my mom and talk in it. She was so embarrassed. Haha he had a car phone as well. Sadly the radiation/waves from the use of this cell phone caused him to develop a brain tumor and he died in 1992. ☹️

Knew this all too well… first student in my school own a mobile phone, was 12yrs old. Not sure the model but definitely a Motorola always known be first manufacturer. Motorola first to have many TV shows sign a contract allow them promote the brand, everyone with a mobile phone, a Motorola. Miss those days of sim phones. I’ll never forget it! If you’re old enough to remember BT phone cards, green and used for high street pay phones, could use the card for a Motorola mobile. No sim card just a credit card size BT phone card slots into the bottom of the mobile phone and used to contact parents or whoever.

Amateur Radio hobbyists pioneered the technology that makes cellphones possible. The towers ,and the systems that switch the signals between them as the cellphones move into and out of their range.
We called the towers "Repeaters".

Phiend99, Rah, rah! Exactly! My father was a ham for nearly 80 years! I wish I would've-- or presently would-- learn code (for others: Morse not software!). It could be a lifesaver in wartime: think hostage, prisoner communication. Oh heck-- the message I'm responding to is from 2019!😫

Currently commenting this comment, using a Motorola Z. it takes 30 minutes to fully charge, and lasts 24 hours with a moderate use.

Bulldogsmomma, after Hurricane Hugo, I managed one of the relief shelters on Sullivan’s Island. We were loaned 2 Motorola bag phones which weighed far more than 3-5 pounds, but allowed me to get needed supplies to people up and down the island. It was a godsend!
