What scale did Airfix use for their first aircraft kit in 1955, a model of the Supermarine Spitfire?

I agree. Unless scale was of critical importance (1:72 vs. 1:76, really) I think a better question would be "What was the wingspan of the first model? 6 inch? 5 inch? 9 inch? 12 inch?", although I realize now that gets into non-metric/metric of today.
