Apparently from Latin 'litus' / 'literos' meaning 'shore'. I've only heard littoral drift being referred to as longshore drift before this.

Littoral has different meanings in a lake vs the ocean. Littoral means intertidal in the ocean. Lakes don't have tides. In lakes, littoral refers to areas where enough sunlight reaches the bottom to support photosynthesis. If the water is clear and shallow enough, the entire lake can be the littoral zone.
