Player #7106391, you're absolutely right so I don't know why you're being down-voted. In early days of computing "kilobytes" was 1024 because it was close to the original meaning of kilo. But that has caused conflict and the standards agency defined the "kibibyte" (KiB) to be 1024 whilst kilobyte (KB) is 1000.

Diver Dan, nope, bytes have a base of 2, not 10. 1024 equals 2 to the power of 10.

oldfart1962, generally yes. But for computers they use powers of 2 and 1024 is close to 1000, so they tweaked it a little.

The byte isn't the next larger unit after the bit. It's the nibble, which is 4 bits. "Nibbles are often used to represent hexadecimal numbers (base-16) because each hexadecimal digit (0-9 and A-F) can be represented by a 4-bit nibble." - Wikipedia
