The origins are pagan. It was called Samhain. It was feast held at the end of the growing season when all would bring their excess crops to share with others and their unused crops. Huge crowds would gather and eat as much as they could so the crops and other foods would not waste. It lasted for days even weeks. People traded goods. There was much celebration. The primitive pagans believed that spirits or bad forces could invade them , their bodies and minds. They decided if they were disguised the bad spirits would pass them by because they would not recognise them,

Oiche Shamhna did originate in Ireland. As Irish travelled throughout the world, they brought this tradition with them. In the same way St Patrick's day is celebrated in other parts of the world today

The tradition of going round doors on Halloween started in Scotland. It is called guising, you would dress up as a ghost etc and had to do a 'trick' which was usually a song or dance, to then get a 'treat'. It was taken up in the USA and twisted into trick OR treat i.e. give us a treat or we'll play a trick on you! Many kids in Scotland still do it in the traditional way.

HipsterPixie12592, Except that trick or treat was never practiced in England. We'd never heard of it when I was a child. We called it Ducking Apple night. Apples were placed in a tub of water and one had to extract them with one's hands behind one's back. Great fun.

munchkin1300, In Des Moines IA, they have Beggars Night, the night before Halloween. Kids go door to door and sing, recite a poem, or tell a joke and get candy. The date was changed to discourage tricks (vandalism).

It originates in paganism, to this day my Irish relatives will pour a cup of tea for every member of their immediate family who is dead on Halloween night. It is an old tradition because Halloween is the time the dead are closest to the living. Samhain is still respected in more rural Irish areas.
