From which country did the Yorkie breed dog originate?
Correct answer: England
MizDizzyMizzy63
I have & used to breed Yorkshire Terriers...they are great little dogs, they don't shed much & don't give off a lot of dander, which makes them great for people with allergies. Great little family dogs, although it is best to introduce them to children while still a puppy. You have to be vigilant, because they can nip when handled roughly.
What wasn't mentioned is that Yorkies were originally bred to control the vermin (rats, mice) in textile mills in northern England & southern Scotland. The first Yorkies weighed around 25-30 pounds & had the beautiful long, silky hair they still have today. The British aristocracy saw them & fell in love with their beautiful coats & happy dispositions & thought they would make excellent companions, but their size was just too big to be a lap dog. As a result, different small breeds were introduced into the lineage so the resulting puppies became gradually smaller & smaller until the breed reached it's current breed standard of 4-7 pounds. It's quite common for pet stock to weigh anywhere from 10-12 pounds (& up...mine is 12.5 pounds) Conversely. you'll see "Teacups," (2-4 pounds) These should be avoided as they are usually the result of irresponsible breeding...line breeding aka in-breeding is most common problem. While these teenie, tiny babies are super cute, they come with a whole set of health issues & often die very young as a result. The the typical life expectancy for a healthy Yorkie is between 12-16 years, with females tending to (but not always) living longer.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but in case you hadn't noticed, I am VERY passionate about these funny little critters. Get yourself a responsibly bred (or better yet, a mixed breed) & you will have absolutely the best friend you will ever have.

I have never had a pure bred dog. Every dog we have had has been a rescue dog. Much fewer health problem from in-breeding.
