chells, I disagree. My ancestors are German descent . They were poor immigrants who picked cotton for a living. They didn' t believe in slavery and fought on the Unions side during the war. They lived in the South. I believe back then if you were captured you were put to death because the south believed it was an act of treson. NOT all caucasions are to blame.

It is only known as “simply the Civil War” in the US. Many, many other countries have had their own civil wars, including my own. Some Americans need to realise that there’s a big wide world beyond their borders.

The portuguese are the ones actually responsible for the start of African slave being sold in the Americas in the the early 1500’s. However it is white men who purchased them. From Europe , Brazil and America. Just dispicable! The actual use of any kind of slave slave slave, black, white, yellow, brown any color has been around since 3500 bc. The ottoman empire had indentered slaves way before the african slave trade existed. So slaves and slave trade wasn’t a new concept it was a new people being used!

While, I don’t know the whole history of slavery, I do know that it’s horrible to treat another as inferior based on the color of her/his skin, gender, sexual orientation, religion or anything else for that matter. I believe if we treat each other the way we want to be treated then life is better for everyone.

Laykan122088, I grew up in Pennsylvania and was shocked when I moved to Florida. Our HOA had to issue a new neighborhood regulation prohibiting the flying of the Confederate flag. They refuse to believe that the Civil War was fought because of slavery.

People... as abhorrent as slavery is, and it is 100% abhorrent, the American Cival War was NOT about the right of human beings to own each other. That is self-evident. The issue at hand was: could the individual states separate themselves from the federal government, in other words, states' rights, whenever they disagreed. If that had been allowed to happen, this would be a different country(s) indeed.

Yes, white southerners paid money for black people to work their fields as a way to compete with the north which had ALL of the steel and manufacturing plants.
But WHO sold the slaves? The men in the slave trade didn't go out to gather a bunch. Already done.

Inass Announi, the union was leveraging tariffs to their benefit and at the souths expense, as most of the political power and rich industrialists lived in the north east. 75-85% of the federal income was paid by southerners. during the war, particularly "Sherman's march" they went about razzing and burning everything to do just that, to destroy for a long time the infrastructure of southern society.

CanMan, slavery wasn't a crime, (obviously as it had existed for 200 years or so in America) the emancipation proclamation, ratified in 1863, written as a political strategy to keep britian-france from coming to defend the rightful confederacy, did absolutely nothing at the time (as the south wasnt in the union) and agreed that Maryland could still keep slaves..

Ttulip12, it wasn't even a new people being used. Africans practised slavery but they were laws governing enslavement, whether indentured or captured. Slaves could be gifted, too.
However, the human slave trade from the Mother Continent to the new world was savage and barbaric.
When the slave ships were stopped, forced breeding between siblings and parents continued on breeding farms to keep slavery going.

in my opinion, neither side "won". In a civil war, when a country is torn apart, everyone loses. Yes, slavery was ended, but history still doesn't recognize the blacks who served, fought, and died for the freedom and rights of slaves.

It’s hard for a country to move forward when racism is practiced in so many different ways. As long as it is taught at home and in groups, it will always be an issue in this country. And as time goes on, we are going to see how well it worked. This country as so many outside enemies that we really need to come together to protect our country!
