Gary, when I was young, I believed the saying came about because of Dr Samuel Mudd; however, in college I learned it came from John Badcock in book called, Dictionary Of Turf (1823).

Player Gigi #28446253, apparently while he was in prison a outbreak had happened and he managed to save a bunch of ppl who had malaria but myself I wouldn't have pardoned him evidence has come out since that he was involved with the conspiracy theory of killing Lincoln

And that is where we get the derogatory term “Mudd”. I remember watching the film “The Omega Man” starring Charleston Heston and Rosalind Cash where in a scene Heston says to Cash “ I’m Morgan” and then Cash clocks him one and says over his unconscious body “Your name is Mudd”

Player #2911224, thanks for clearing the myth. Sounds like the saying even predated the 1823 book, but was just defined in the “Dictionary of Turf...”. Its funny how many old wives tales get circulated in the comments.

Player #5555, The article said that Mudd owned slaves not Booth. Why did President Johnson pardon him. Sounds like he was definitely part of the plan. I have always heard that he didn't know what Booth had done.???

When Mudd heard about the assassination, his wife and kids were home alone with Booth. I'm pretty sure I would have done all I could to ensure their safety before setting a bunch of hotheads on Booth's tail.
